St Joseph Icon I researched several icons and composed designs to meet the client specifications which were for a traditional, Western-style variety. While Orthodox Christians show St Joseph as an older man with gray hair, the West has been more open in this regard. As one opinion goes "St. Joseph was a strong man chosen to be the foster father. He may have been even older than Mary, perhaps 24 or so to her 14 to 15." Legends suggest that "he may have died in his late fifties." Visionary St Birgitta of Sweden, referred to St Joseph as the venerable, old man but did not offer an age.
Description of St Joseph There is an "S" shape to the above figure. St Joseph is looking to his right, contemplating Mary and Jesus who are depicted in another icon (not shown). On the left side, see the subtle suggestion that he needs to depart to labor in the world- with reserve. This is an image of the active and contemplative life of St Joseph. His striving for a perfect balance of love, prayer and activity that should be emulated by all men if they hope to ride out the many storms of modern life with purity of heart and mind.
“Of the three principal objects of our devotion, Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin, and St Joseph, we may say that what forms the glory and special lustre of Jesus Christ in His mortal life is His humility and meekness; that of the Blessed Virgin, her purity; that of St Joseph, the wisdom of his conduct.” ~ Rev. Louis Lallemant
"...whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." St Paul
