The color varies according to emphasis. There are several customary legends pertaining to this representation. One, for example, has it that Mary was weaving the veil for the temple when the angel Gabriel came to announce. Another claims that she began weaving the seamless garment that was eventually divided by the soldiers on Calvary. More photos at bottom.
