A Journey into the Local Desert.
One hesitates to pick the delicate blooms from this plant as the thorny branches look so very foreboding and perilous to traverse! The name, Crown of Thorns, has been adopted over the centuries and is most suitable. Once reminded, in such a visual way, the event of Christ's crowning become more real.
One fine specimen of the Crown of Thorns. It can be found nestled among other terrible, prickly and devious trail specimens within the "desert " at one of three exceptional, inside gardens. Click on boxes below.
Out-of-doors, the weather is cold and offers its own unpleasantries. Most of us are grateful to have have missed many of the huge snowfalls that have hit other parts. Everything on the ground is appropriately barren this Lent. Gratefully, on the day of this photo shot, the lapis blue sky was quite heavenly on the day and greeted all visitors with a welcome sign of hope.
Contemplating the Crown of Thorns during Lent
Lenten Season Feature
Extreme Humility, has been reproduced by iconographers for centuries and in diverse ways. Online, you can locate thousands of images and about as many descriptions.
Here you see a traditional, waste length Christ figure started in egg tempera and of the devotional 8x10 size. It is a compilation of at least two standard presentations. The background will be a type of oxidized pigmented gold, which I am happy to try for the first time. The crown of thorns, reed, inscriptions and anticipated embellishments will be added last. They are painted over the top of the completed garments and hair. You may inquire as to the availability of this icon, or request a custom copy to your exact specifications.
Below: I want you to see just how rich egg tempera can look. After a building up of many layers, Jesus' garment now has the rich and textured look of velvet.

I am a visual artist. Personal notes found here are not Writer's Handbook "masterpieces". I have a little fun with editing and updates as time permits. What you read and view one day might be changed the next.
