It has been a pretty good traveling summer with people and art inspiration galore. Now it is time to slow down and log back in. The fall will be spent on independent paintings, pending commissions and instructing. Let's not think too much about hot cider and chocolate drinks just yet though. It is still summery, fair weather around here. Praise God for that gift!
Decorative Scroll Painting
Presented here is a decoration just begun.
This sort of spiral, scroll-like ornamentation or embellishment might be called scroll art, referred to as frieze or volute art or filigree, depending upon the material used and the way it is applied. In any case, it's decorative use is ancient and whatever the name, it is always lovely and timeless.
Maybe you could just call it beautiful? "So even men can create things that are beautiful. Again, these human creations may be considered beautiful inasmuch as they possess qualities that reflect the beautiful qualities of God."
About twelve coats of paint and gold leaf bits were needed in order to achieve the hand tooled, rich background. Then, a vibrant translucent red paint was selected as the floral scroll base color. The black directing lines will mostly disappear as I now begin to build up layers of shadow and light.
A friend recently sent me this quote:"If a path is beautiful, ask where it leads to. But if the destination is beautiful, ever mind the path, keep walking...".
Intricate detailing, like this, might be compared to a meandering path where obstacles suddenly "appear" and although I'm excited to finish, you might guess that it will take some time before I arrive at my beautiful destination.
Like a lot visual artists who have been working for a while, I have compiled a great collection of art books. Although not as intricate, my scroll art painting most resembles the patterns found in my "Fantastic Ornament" book as featured by my art mannequin below. Readers can find zillions more images online.
