Coverage for the upcoming workshop.
Professional journalist, Karen Mahoney, wrote a very thoughtful piece for our Catholic Herald and you can find that online link here. It was also featured in the March 31, 2016 paper edition (below).
Karen had piles of information to sort through and I am so proud of her final product. I wrote her back that, from now on, she should sign her articles "by the hand of Karen", like iconographers often do. Theodore, after reading the article, noted among other things, "Great! I read it and it is concise and very interesting!" That means he liked it.
Ricardo Torres, Herald photographer, came to my home studio to take pictures. He kept clicking away as I pulled out one selection after another and it was certainly a unique experience for me. How delightful to see that they decided to feature "My Queen" (The Cornation of the Virgin in Heaven) from the majestic Basilica of St Josaphat in Milwaukee, WI.

We have an iconographer in our midst
Sounds like some kind of scientist, doesn’t it? Or, perhaps someone from the film industry. That’s a might closer.
And iconographer is someone who creates or “writes” icons – the sacred images usuallassociated with Eastern Orthodoxy. Iconographers prefer the term “write” to “paint” because creating an icon is a deeply prayerful and meditative experience. For centuries, these beautiful images have been the instruments of meditative prayer, both for the artist and the viewer. It’s an ages-old art form that requires training, discipline, and is a vocation rather than a trade.
There aren’t many iconographers worldwide, and we have only a handful of them here in the United States.
One of them is Christi Jentz, founder of Lumen Christi Art. Jentz is a native of Brookfield, Wisconsin and has studied iconography both in the US and abroad.
I was very excited to see that the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Catholic Herald Newspaper recently ran a nice feature on Jentz, and on the international workshop she’s coordinating with Greek Master Iconographer, Theodoros Papadopolous. The workshop will be held June 13-17 at the Redemptorist Retreat Center in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
Iconography is an historic, richly spiritual and aesthetically amazing trade. Enrich yourself by reading the full article on Jentz. And if you are the least bit artistically inclined, attend the Byzantine Icon Workshop. It will be the experience of a lifetime, I promise!
