Do you recognize this Pantocrator mosaic above? It is one of the most famous images of Christ ever produced. Maybe you've seen it copied in a book or reproduced in an advertisement promoting an event but, you really don't know much, if anything, about its origin.
1. The Byzantines, employed talented artists and craftsmen to create it.
2. One Ottoman, Muslim King (sometimes spelled Moslem) chose to preserve it under a coat of whitewash.
3. Preservationists were able to restore this and other treasures beginning in the 19th century.
4. The future of Hagia Sofia and its murals is anyone's guess.
