Secular Franciscan Order of Australia on their “Way of Life”. New Tracts Featuring My St Francis of Assisi Paintings.
Loved working on these two paintings for the Franciscans of Australia promotion. Files are posted at the bottom of this page for you to open and read.
You might note the unusual looking scenery. Well, the mountain is the famous Uluru - Ayers Rock, the craggy rocks represent Mount La Verna in Italy, his ascetic life and ascent, the ground color is based in part on the brilliant red clay of that region. The tree bark is pale like that of the gum tree, the flowers are somewhat dotted like in native aboriginal design and note the Southern Cross in the Brother Fire portrait. St Francis has the slanted eyes made popular by Giotto and others during the period just after St Francis' holy and austere death.
I do have other projects underway, however I am working on more Canticle of Creation paintings during free time. My mind is loaded with complimentary visuals of water, wind and sky, sun and moon, and Sister Death.
For me, that one- Sr Death, is the most complicated to conceive and render because I want to be gentle and clear about what St Francis is telling us- that we are not made for this world (as lovely as he portrays it), and all must prepare. Here is the Canticle in full.
1. Francis of Assisi by Arnaldo Fortini.
2. Saint Francis of Assisi: Passion, Poverty & the Man Who Transformed the Church by Bret Thoman OFS
3. The Little Flowers is one of the first stories written about St Francis' life.
