The Queenship of Mary
first published September 2013
This sculpture suggests earlier prototypes from Byzantine and Romanesque. roots However, note that the facial expressions are warm and inviting as opposed to stoic.
One way you can tell if this is of Roman (Latin) Rite, Eastern Rite or Orthodox origin is to look at the blessing hand of Jesus. Can you tell which it is?
In the other hand Jesus holds a little orb (my guess) signifying the weight of the world. The veiled curtain in the background is not always included in an enthroned icon. "The veil was an old testament type or symbol of the humanity of God incarnate. The Scriptures tell us that at the moment Christ died upon the Cross the veil of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom- that is, God rent it" (A. Hart).
