The 2018 season will include a series of contemporary botanical paintings of my design- the details of which are underway. Re-posted here is a project featuring two dekightful, historical patterns.
"The art of illumination is just that- art. It may have been developed very much in religious context, but its aesthetic qualities are impossible to ignore ...what we think of as secular values for artistic beauty, imaginative richness , sensuous enjoyment had their place at the very heart of medieval belief."
Floral art illuminations, like the one I recreated below, can be found around the borders of historical psalters, breviaries, books of hours, manuscripts and more.
As styles changed so did the floral work. Over the centuries, it became increasingly elaborate, sumptuous and, in Renaissance times, the borders became notably realistic.
The thought here was to take an "old masterpiece" idea and give it a contemporary spin. Featured is a festive and whimsical floral arrangement from the 1400's.
