Last month I showed you an icon board that needed to be ordered through an outside resource. I don't have the tools to make one like that. What I am able to make are boards of a basic rectangular or square shape like the one below. This board will receive a straight polya or raised frame later in the process. The firsts steps of clay board construction: Supplies required: wood board, double boiler, gesso (is a mixture of rabbit skin glue, marble dust, water), cheese cloth, sandpaper, elbow grease, time. Miscellaneous items. The mix is a creamy consistency because it is applied warm. As the mix cools, it hardens. To speed up the drying process, a board can be placed outside on warm or hot days. Up to ten layers will be applied, dried and alternately sanded until the board achieves a flat, porcelain like finish. It should be smooth to the touch and without rough edges or bumps.
