Thank you for viewing. I receive requests for East and West style icons.
Well Known This is the first icon commission that I've received where the saint, Pope John Paul II, is immediately recognized through an extensive photographic record. And that poses a particular challenge because any icon would necessarily need to have a resemblance although it need not be in the style of precise photo realism.
As well, the icon depicts all figures in their transformed and transfigured state, in other words, icons show how the saint appears in heaven and not on earth. It's up to the individual iconographer to determine how that will best be accomplished and to what extent- especially for Western icons where there's more lenience in this regard.
Legacy Pope John Paul II lived a long life under the scrutiny of the public eye and he accomplished much.
For this specific icon the emphasis is 1. the pope's promotion of the Divine Mercy message, as authentically communicated in the writings of St Faustina, and 2. that it stands out as a crowning achievement in his ministry.
Details The crucifix is in the general style of the one that Sister Faustina wore during her life although it is depicted here in gold color and not black and silver.
The Divine Mercy, a miniature size, is based on the first image completed under the direction of St. Faustina.
To the right is the name "Saint Pope John Paul II". To the left top is "Jesus I Trust in You" and also inscribed at the base of the Divine Mercy Image but in Polish. At the time of this posting the final border colors were yet to be completed. More information can be provided upon request.
More 1. Officially decreed by Pope John Paul II in 2000, the Feast of Divine Mercy is formally celebrated in the Catholic and Eastern Rite churches on the Sunday following Easter. 2. April 2nd, the day that this saint died, is Good Friday in 2021 and also the start of the nine day novena to Divine Mercy 3. The image of Divine Mercy shows Jesus as the resurrected Christ who enters miraculously through the locked door and into the room where his hiding and fearful apostles were gathered:
"...whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." St Paul
